North Cowichan Grant Application Successful

July 29, 2013
The Municipality of North Cowichan has been successful in its application for funding of $200,000 towards the Waterwheel Square development. The total value of the project is estimated at over $802,000.

“The Island Coastal Economic Trust will provide funding for the redevelopment of a portion of the Waterwheel Park parking lot into a vibrant town centre square of approximately 15,000-20,000 square feet and will reconfigure the parking area to accommodate events.  The square will become the “heart” of Chemainus and will provide an energetic, multi-functional, pedestrian-friendly space that will host events such as the public market, arts and cultural festivals, music in the park and other functions.”

North Cowichan’s recent revitalization tax exemption program to encourage private development of the downtown and future Benchlands development were contributing factors in the success of the application.
